How can I set a minimum break time?
To set a minimum break time, enable the limit in the break's restrictions and choose what happens if an employee tries to return early.
Before you start
You need the "Manage clock ins/outs" permission. The minimum time is set per break type and applies every time that break is used.
Set the minimum time
- Go to Configuration >> Schedules >> Breaks.
- Create a new break or edit an existing one.
- In the "Restrictions" section, enable "Limit minimum duration of use".
- Enter the hours and minutes each use of the break must last.
- Answer the question "What happens if the employee tries to end the break before reaching the minimum time?" and choose an option:
- Blocking (selected by default): the employee can't end the break until the minimum is reached.
- Informative with confirmation: the employee gets a warning and can end the break if they confirm.
- Save your changes.
You can also set a minimum time for custom breaks in the planner.
Key points
- The minimum can't be greater than the maximum. If it is, Sesame won't let you save.
- In new breaks, the maximum and minimum duration limits and the usage interval are disabled by default.
- Changes apply to breaks that start after you save. Anyone already on a break finishes it under the rules it started with.
- Breaks that have already been recorded aren't recalculated.
What's the difference between the minimum and the maximum duration? The minimum duration applies to each use of the break: it's how long that break must last before returning to work. The maximum duration applies per workday and adds up all uses of that same break. For example, with a minimum of 35 minutes and a maximum of 60, an employee who takes a 35-minute break can't start a second one that day, because they couldn't reach the minimum without going over the maximum.
