Why might clock in/out with Face ID be failing?

If your employees are having trouble clocking in and clocking out using facial recognition, follow this step-by-step guide to identify and resolve the most common issues.

Check the settings

Make sure the configuration is correct:

  • Confirm that the tablet is set up and linked to the correct workplace.
  • Verify that employees are assigned to the workplace configured on the tablet.

Check employee photos

For Face ID to work properly, photo quality is essential. Review the employee’s profile and check the following:

  1. The employee has a Face ID photo registered and saved in their profile.

  2. The photo meets these requirements:

    1. The image is clear, sharp, and free of noise.
    2. The background is white and uniform.
    3. The employee’s face is well-lit.
    4. It is not a full-body photo; it should be from the chest up only.

  3. Use of glasses:

    1. If the registered photo includes glasses, the employee must clock in/out wearing glasses.
    2. If the registered photo is without glasses, the employee must clock in/out without glasses.

  4. The employee’s photo is included in the Face ID face list. This is essential!

The employee’s face must be included in the tablet’s database. To check this on the tablet, go to Configuration >> Facial recognition and tap the list icon. This will allow you to confirm that the employee appears in the face list.

What if the employee does not appear?

If the employee does not appear in the list, you’ll need to regenerate the Face ID data. To do this from the admin panel, follow these steps:

  • Go to Configuration >> Devices >> Tablet >> [Device name] >> Edit >> Regenerate Face ID data.
  • Enable the toggle if it’s disabled.
  • Click Regenerate Face ID data.
  • Check the face list on the tablet again.

Check the environment and tablet placement

These factors affect facial recognition, so keep them in mind when setting up the tablet as a fixed clock in/out point:

  • Make sure the tablet has a stable internet connection.
  • Regarding lighting, light should come from the front or side of the employee. Avoid strong light or sunlight behind them. The clock in/out area should not be dark.
  • The physical position of the tablet should be appropriate: it should not be backlit or placed next to a window with direct sunlight.

Check precision settings

Precision affects how strict the system is when performing facial recognition.

  • The recommended standard precision range is between 67 and 63. If precision is set to 67 and facial recognition is failing, we recommend gradually lowering it.
  • Keep in mind that the ideal precision will always depend on the environment and the photos used. Precision that is too low may confuse faces, while precision that is too high may fail by requiring overly strict conditions.

From the admin panel, follow this path to adjust facial recognition precision:
Configuration >> Devices >> Tablet >> [Device name] >> Edit.

Additional checks

If Face ID is still failing, try the following additional checks:

  • Immediate mode: if enabled, make sure the employee is standing still and directly in front of the tablet at the moment of recognition. If the employee is not ready, disable it and try Normal mode.
  • Flash: if enabled and recognition fails, disable it and try again.
  • Sound: if enabled and recognition fails, disable it and try again.
