Migration from Overtime balance to Compensation: everything you need to know
Before starting the migration process, it is important that you understand what's changing, how to organize the transition, and what you need to do to carry out the migration. We explain it below.
Why is this migration happening?
If you use the Overtime balance, in the coming weeks the tool will evolve to become Compensation. Rest assured, because:
- The new system uses the same calculation engine, meaning there will be no unexpected recalculations.
- Your current configuration will be reorganized into independent components to give you greater precision and control: overtime and compensation policy, multiplier rules, categorization rules, and time margins.
- The migration is not irreversible. In fact, you can move your employees one by one or in groups, verify that balances match perfectly, and if needed, return any person to the Overtime balance at any time.
How does the migration work step by step?
1. Activation
When you activate Compensation Beta in your account, the system automatically translates your Overtime balance, Categorized hours, and Count start rules into the new Compensation format: policies, multiplier rules, categorization rules, and time margins.
What this activation does not do is move your employees. That is your decision, whenever you want and at the pace you prefer.
2. Review
- Go to Configuration >> Overtime balance.
- Click the banner at the top, on "View new configuration".
- In the Compensation section, you will see a banner with two options:
-
View comparison: opens a full-screen view with the equivalences between your old and new configuration. You can use the side menu (Summary, Policy, Margins, Multipliers, Categorization) to navigate between the different configurations and check that everything matches. This screen is read-only and updates in real time if you make changes.
- Migrate employees: opens the prompt from which you decide, one by one or in batches, who to move to Compensation.

3. Migration
Click "Migrate employees" and select who you want to move. You can start with a single person, verify their balance is identical before and after, and only then decide whether to migrate the rest (in batches or the entire workforce at once).
Migrated employees retain the same rules, margins, and accumulated balance. Once you have checked that everything is correct, you can continue with the rest of the workforce in batches or all at once.
4. Coexistence
While employees are split between Overtime balance and Compensation, both configurations run in parallel without mixing:
- Whatever you change in Overtime balance, its multiplier rules or categorized hours, affects only employees remaining there.
- Whatever you change in Compensation, Multiplier rules, Categorization rules, or Time margins, affects only already-migrated employees.
FAQs
What information is migrated to Compensation?
Everything you already have configured: your full policy, accumulated balances, time-off and pay compensations already carried out, and any expiry notifications you had active.
Likewise, the tolerance margin will appear within the "Time margins" section, filled in automatically from the count start you already had defined.
When migrating, a single global policy for the entire company will be generated (just as you had with Overtime balance). From there, you can create as many policies, rules, and margins as you need and assign them by workplace, department, or employee.
Will I lose my configuration or my team's history?
No, the migration does not alter any value; it only translates it into the new structure. Your previous history remains accessible in read-only mode from the Overtime balance section. In addition, the migration milestone itself is recorded in the history of your new policy, with the date and the person who confirmed it.
How can I check whether an employee's migration is correct?
To verify the data of a migrated employee:
- Go to Employees >> Select the employee's profile >> Statistics.
- Click the "Compare with overtime balance statistics" button.
- A side-by-side view of Compensation vs Overtime balance will be displayed to compare the accumulated balance, overtime generated, and the breakdown of applied rules.
This way, if something doesn't add up, you can identify exactly where the difference lies.
Can I return an employee to Overtime balance if I find an error?
Yes, you can send an employee back to Overtime balance if you need to. To do so, follow these steps:
- Go to Configuration >> Compensation, find the policy the employee is assigned to, and click the avatar.
-
Deselect the employee in the prompt and confirm the change.
When reverting the migration, any validations or compensations carried out in the new section will be discarded, and their balance will be calculated according to the configuration in force at that time in Overtime balance.
Can I keep using Overtime balance while I test Compensation?
Yes, you can work in both sections. In addition, the changes you make will only affect the employees assigned to one or the other.
What will happen to Overtime balance once I finish migrating all my employees?
Once 100% of your workforce is migrated, the Overtime balance section will switch to "Read-only" mode for a few weeks. This means you can still consult its data to resolve any questions, without the risk of modifying it by mistake while you get used to Compensation.
Will employees notice any changes during the migration?
While the gradual migration is in progress, employees will continue to see the usual Statistics view, with no notices or interruptions. However, once the migration of the entire workforce is complete, the Statistics view will be updated with the new design, keeping their balances and breakdowns intact.
What happens if I do not complete the migration before the deadline?
If the deadline arrives and there are still employees pending migration, the system will automatically move them to Compensation, applying exactly the same rule translation you would apply. In any case, you will be notified in advance by email and in your Sesame panel before this happens.
